Urban China magazine’s challenge
Founded in 2003, Urban China is the first magazine on urbanism in China. It has a clear international vision and discusses various fields including policies, architecture, economics, humanities, social ecology and business.
Since its inception, “Urban China” has become a must-read for the professional elites of the government, such as the decision-making level of government agencies, construction industry executives, urban research institutions and scholars, and even the professional elites who closely follow the development trend of the city.
The magazine first launched its digital version for iPad and iPhone in 2015 but decided to turn towards a new solution after receiving feedback from readers. In order to improve the user experience, Urban China Magazine chose the Rakuten Aquafadas’ suite to build the new version of their application, which was launched in April 2019.
Solution: An interactive e-magazine destined for iOS
Derived from the paper magazine, the iPad version of Urban China provides not only an overview of various topics but also offers rich, interactive experiences for readers. It presents one thematic issue quarterly, digital versions of past issues as well as ad hoc special titles.
Result: A strengthened back-office and a vivid reader experience
Thanks to the Rakuten Aquafadas’ digital content publishing solution, Urban China gained stronger technical innovation and back-office management as well as improved publishing cost and time efficiency.
They were able to bring out the most stable and smooth experience possible to their readers, while refining user experience with additional interactions and new features, including bookmarks, a comment section and a multi-language function. The digital magazine application was downloaded over 500 times right after its launch resulting in ongoing increase of subscriptions to the magazine.
You can take a look at the app if you’re an iOS user by downloading it from the App store.
