How to add value to existing content and create new monetisation streams for your magazine?
National Geographic Magazine is the official journal of the National Geographic Society and it is published by National Geographic Partners LLC. The magazine has been issuing the explorations and discoveries of its scientists, explorers and photographers for 131 years. It’s produced monthly and as of 2015, was circulating worldwide in nearly 40 local-language editions and 33 languages.
In Spain, National Geographic Magazine is issued by the leading magazine publisher Grupo RBA and it used to be available as a non-interactive replica of the PDF printed magazine only. To meet the needs of their readers, and to create more engagement with print and digital subscribers, RBA wanted to create a highly rich and fully interactive omnichannel version of their monthly magazine. While creating more value of their content they also wanted to come up with new monetisation streams by enriching their subscription package to include print and digital versions, extra content and 3 screens at the same time.

Utilising the Rakuten Aquafadas’ digital content platform, RBA moved from PDF version of National Geographic Spain to an enriched interactive format thanks to Rakuten Aquafadas plugin for Adobe InDesign. They not only made the magazine available on iPhone, iPhone X, iPad and Standard version for Android but at the same time RBA transitioned from a predominantly print model to new digital offering, keeping the quality of their content.
Results : happy readers, increased content value and new monetisation streams
Initial results a few weeks after launch are already very optimistic. The number of digital magazine subscriptions has increased while adoption rate of existing subscribers is high too.
